I don't think I understand your argument as to why he should charge
$150. I've worked as a consultant on several jobs where that logic would
not apply. I've also hired consultants on several jobs where that logic
would not apply. In general, I'd have a very hard time forking over
$150/hr for a consultant with no prior consulting experience, and
without some kind of consulting company backing them.
At $150/hr, a consultant working full time should rake in $300k/year
before taxes (and remember expenses are paid for over and above that).
At that rate we'd all be consultants. ;-)
A general rule of thumb I tend to work with is to think about what your
annual salary should be if *you* (i.e. there might be someone with less
expertise who could do the job, but assume your expertise was needed)
were doing the same job as an employee. Take that number, divide by
1000, and that's what your hourly rate should be. If it's a short term
gig (i.e. measured in days), you might go a bit above that, and if it's
a long term gig (i.e. measured in months), you might go a bit below that
(there is a lot to be said for not having to look for another gig, as
that is time consuming and expensive).
