it depends on what type of business and where in L.A.

when I called LA CITY and told them for me it was my computer consulting business, they said no business license was needed for that type of business and that was 1999, so I just had to do a DBA,
but then I lived in LA city district at the time, Antonivichs district I think

All,

I did this once, but it was a long time ago in another county.
What's involved with establishing a "legal business name" in
Los Angeles? For a sole proprietorship.

Actually, this is something we might want to consider ourselves.
If we ever really got off the ground. If we ever came up with
a name, unless we really want to stick with lula-biz. And if
we could agree on a structure for the business.

Jeff

you just pick a name and go down to city hall and fill out a application
for a business permit. they usuyally have requirements, like you are
to post a DBA notice that you are doing business under that name.

That answer was basically for any business, but just so you know a sole
proprietorship means one owner. What y6ou might be thinking is a
limited partnership among several individuals.....jef

Go here: http://regrec.co.la.ca.us/clerk/naming.htm

Fairly painless and inexpensive. Costs all of $10. Then you have to
publish. You don't have to find a newspaper right away. I strongly urge
you to wait for the ads that will come in the mail from the small local
newspapers. They watch the business name filings and send out flyers.
They are much cheaper than the bigees and do the job perfectly legally.
If you're business is based in L.A. county you also need a business
license. This is a tax thing. If you expect no profit for a year or two
you won't be charged any tax. The banks want to see the stamped business
name filing paper to allow you to open a commercial checking account.
