As for myself, I have never learned much from tests. Who are others that are doing it? As
a consultant or employee, the companies I know of want both credentials, experience, and
professional references that can be verified. If things have changed, I have not seen it.
I would like to know if changes have occurred. Certifications are helping people at
critical junctions. John Sunderson from the Manic Mondays group lost an employment
opportunity this last week because the competition had an MSCE. They actually told him
that. On the other hand there are many people from the group that are certified that
can't find work.
There appears to be a recent increase in the demand for corporate training with Linux.
The Irvine Cal-Poly school has two classes scheduled for me beginning April 5 and 8 hours
every Saturday for awhile and another morning class M-F Mornings, and the Covina Cal-Poly
school has me currently teaching evenings.
Although state funded training is dead, corporations are willing to pay between 2-4K per
student for a training class. Only about 1/2 of my students are actually planning to take
the certification exam. This illustrates that corporations want training and
certifications because they are paying for it.
Red Hat has introduced another certification called RHCT, Red Hat Certified Technician.
This provides a more relaxed track to RHCE and a longer time to pay to get to RHCE.
