Thanks Chris & Pete; I had heard of Mr. Schneier's system but
didn't know it was his idea, wouldn't have been able to connect
the system with the name.
I notice he also calls for open source software for use in the
voting machines.
Check out <http://www.commondreams.org/views03/0131-01.htm>
(from my sig file, below) from January 2003 but an excellent
exposition of the problem.

voting machine that prints out an ATM-style paper ballot. The voter checks
the paper ballot for accuracy and then drops it into a sealed ballot box.
The paper ballots are the "official" votes and can be used for recounts,
while the computer provides a quick initial tally. E-voting machines must
have the ability to verify some of the translation steps; voters can then
verify that the machine correctly recorded their votes, and election
officials can, if there is a recount, verify the votes were correctly
tabulated. We can't eliminate translation steps, but we can add redundancy.

SUPPORT OUR TROOPS - BRING THEM HOME! ALIVE! RESTORE THEIR BENEFITS!
GIVE "W" Bush, Donald Rumsfeld, Dick Cheney, Karl Rove, Richard Perle,
Paul Wolfowitz, Condoleezza Rice and David Addington a pack, a rifle,
and some sun-tan lotion and SEND THEM to Iraq to replace the troops.
URGE the British Parliament to do the same with their Prime Minister.
