Actually I am a Linux admin, but this client, for various reasons, is
best served by a windows ADC/app server. I like Linux, but no one o/s
is the best solution in every situation. And although we all like to
bash Micro$oft, they have had some good ideas, along with some bad ones.

This server needs to implement a windoze xp client that is locked down
hard. I need to control the users; file sharing is the least of my
worries. It is possible to push down a default profile from a samba
server to clients, but only at the clients' first logon. After that,
you would have to make changes to all clients individually. That's
where a centralized configuration management utility like Group Policy
Objects comes in.
If anyone knows of an alternative to GPOs, please post. AFAIK, even
Novell Linux doesn't offer this for windoze clients.

I prefer to not use swat; it messes up the formatting of your smb.conf
file.

Chris,
LDAP will centralize logons. That's not the problem. Windoze Group
Policy Objects allow you to push down or overwrite certain registry
settings on many clients at once. AFAIK ldap will not do this, with or
without samba.
Thanks for all your suggestions,
