[Lula] kde & gnome?

Hi group,

I have a box running debian testing/kde and I am pondering installing gnome.  
I know that because of the different desktop file conventions kde desktop 
icons become useless in gnome.  Is there any good way around this (and why 
can't the d.e.s come up with some standards)?
