It all depends on what one has installed. The desktop manager is only a
convenience to invoke the programs. If all of the dependencies are
satisfied for both KDE and GNOME, any application can be used from
either desktop. That is to say that gtop and Evolution (which I use) can
be invoked with KDE and KDE, applications can be used on GNOME.

There are other applications that are independent; that is they stand on
their own; like ForeFox and OpenOffice.

If the all of dependencies are installed, one can invoke the application
from a command shell without the desktop manager. Sometimes it's easier
than locating the application on the desktop manager menu bar (assuming
that the application is in the path).
