Richard,

Putting them into ~.fonts will work for local fonts. I have always used
SuSE's font install utility which allows global installation of the
fonts and cuts off the anti-aliasing at the smaller fonts with a user
defined level. I have 993 fonts installed because about three years back
I bought a 500 font CD from Bitstream at a reasonable price and have
installed others from miscellaneous sources. The only problem is that
only SuSE has the font installer to enable global fonts. There are some
other methods and utilities that work more or less successfully for
global installation on other distributions. The SuSE font install
utility is part of KDE, and I don't believe that GNOME has it although I
can't be sure because I never tried.

The SuSE utility is (as Superuser for Global Installation)
ControlPanel->SystemAdmin->Font Install
