I'm not positive what they mean exactly in a POP context.  And I'm also 
not positive what "expire" means but I hope it's the same as the others.

In the IMAP protocol, when you delete a message, what you actually are 
doing is tagging that message with a "deleted" flag.  The IMAP server 
preserves the message on disk until it is specifically told to purge the 
deleted messages.  Basically a safety net so you can undelete easily -- 
even if you don't use a Trash folder.
