Thanks, Jeff.  That was basically my understanding re IMAP.  The "expire all 
folders" command comes from kmail v 1.9.3.  How come nobody uses the 
command "purge"?  Too straightforward?

<rant mode>
This is one of my gripes as far as supporting early adopters trying to migrate 
to Linux.  At least Micro$oft is *consistent* on the desktop.  Linux 
developers seem to have the attitude of "if Fred did X, then X must be bad 
and we have to do Y".  Try explaining that to an early adopter.  Email is a 
good example here--compare Kmail, Evolution and Thunderbird.
