One thing that could help bridge the gap is, as I am fond of pointing out,
Wine.  If/once Wine can run a large number of Windows games on
Un*x, that's one less thing keeping your average teenager from
running Un*x on his PC.   And, since Wine supports all flavors of
X86 Un*x (Linux, FreeBSD, Solaris, MacOSX), it is attracting
developers from all those OS's.
Eventually one or two of those OS's will become truly popular, at which point
native game development will take off.

Wine still has a long ways to go; the average game still doesn't work
with it.  But it has good bones, and the number of supported apps keeps
increasing; I'm very optimistic.
