In the space of 10 years, Linux has moved from the world of academic
computer labs to mainstream corporate IT. Join us to learn about recent
Linux developments, ranging from its impact on database sales to
competition with Windows, Solaris and other operating systems.  Plus
practical implementation lessons learned.

What are the business benefits?  Some point to Linux' flexible licensing
model, the wide range of supported hardware platforms, a choice of
support providers, plus rapid innovation due to its open source
approach.

What are the cost savings?  In areas such as hardware acquisition,
software licensing and maintenance, support and administration.

What selection criteria should one use? There are many versions of Linux
- RedHat, IBM, Novell's SUSE, and Canonical's Ubuntu.  Business
applications are written (and certified) for specific versions.  

What development tools and enterprise applications are available?  Are
these also specific to the version of Linux you are using?

What are the licensing issues?  There is lot of open-source Linux out
there under GPL [General Public License]; is this an appropriate
licensing model?

What open source standards are emerging?  The Free Standards Group (FSG)
has worked for years on a number of open standards, including a server
specification called the Linux Standard Base (LSB).

Mr Riggott and Mr. Jesung will provide answers to these questions and
more, each from their unique perspective.  Matthew Riggott will also
share insights from the recent Red Hat Summit in San Diego.

Kaivan Jesung will share practical lessons learned from deployment of
IBM's portal solutions on Linux, plus the benefits and limitations of
deployment on Linux versus other, competing operating systems. He will
explain advantages of Linux in relation to maintenance, ease of
deployment, security, and robustness of IBM solutions as well as share
war stories -- implementation lessons learned. 

PRE-MEETING PRESENTATIONS at 6:30:  

Dan Kegel -- Deploying Windows Applications on Linux using Wine

There is increasing interest in using Linux on the desktop, not just for
servers.  Dan will share insights on implementing Linux on the desktop
using Wine.

Wine is an Open Source implementation of the Windows API on top of X and
Unix -- a compatibility layer for running Windows programs. Wine
provides both a development toolkit for porting Windows source code to
Unix as well as the capability to run many unmodified Windows programs
on x86-based Unixes, including Linux, Solaris, and FreeBSD.

Matt Johnson -- Revival of a Dead PC with Knoppix

Matt finds a very useful application for Knoppix is "Revival of a Dead
PC."  Most of us have, at one time or another, found that their Windows
PC would not boot.  Most manufacturers recommend using the recovery
disk, which may result in data loss.  Using a Linux boot CD such as
Knoppix, many options are opened up for "do it yourself data recovery."
He invites the audience to "bring out your dead" for a demonstration.

ABOUT OUR SPEAKERS

 

Matthew Riggott is the Regional Sales Director for Red Hat in Southern
California.  With over 10 years of experience in UNIX, Linux and open
source software.  Originally from the UK Matthew has sold Linux and open
source solutions to partners, OEM' s and corporate customers on both
sides of the Atlantic. Pror to joining Red Hat Matthew was responsible
for North American Sales at Linspire (formerly Lindows) a desktop Linux
provider.

Kaivan Jesung joined Alphalogix in 2002 with the goal of further
enhancing the field of solutions deployment. With over 10 years
experience in project management and enterprise solution architecture,
Mr. Jesung has been at the forefront of deploying IBM solutions for
several enterprise customers in a variety of configurations. His
knowledge of IBM software deployment has earned his company a Beacon
Award and a Lotus Award for integrated deployments. With his expertise
in solution architecture, Mr. Jesung has applied his skill towards
shortening deployment time for customers while still delivering a robust
software solution

Dan Kegel has been a programmer since he discovered the joys of software
development on a TRS-80 back in 1978.  Since then, he's built,
programmed, and deployed numerous embedded microcomputer systems
(including one in the Rose Bowl in 1984 :-) and has had the thrill of
seeing his name carried to Mars aboard a robotic spacecraft and explode
upon arrival.

He currently works at Google, where he gets to play with Linux, gcc, and
Wine.  His hobby is being a Daddy to his two-year-old son Alex, and

Matt Johnson has a degree in Business Administration from the University
of Tennessee.  He has worked in the IT field as a programmer and
consultant for for over twenty years at Ashton Tate, Country Wide and
MGM Studios.  Currently he is a consultant to several small businesses
with an emphasis on manufacturers.
