I suppose that will work but there is a major drawback. One of the aims
of a complete distribution is the system integration efforts that will
not exist by just adding the newer src.rpm.

I suppose that it's not possible to eliminate risk from human experience
and new distributions just might have some system integration problems,
but not to the extent of one's own patches. As long as you understand
the risks, I suppose I might follow the above advice too, but with a
Plan B; just in case ....
