DRM is short for "Digital Rights Management". This is software which
encrypts data files, usually music files or video files, so that the
content creator can control how the file is used.

While no one argues that a content creator should have some control over
their creation, the methods that are used don't take into account the
varying complexities of copyright law. Things like copyrights expiring,
those aren't taken into account, rendering the media unusable even
though copyright might not apply. Also, laws like "fair use" are rarely
taken into account at all.

Personally, I'd like to see a law on the books to the tune of: "All DRM
systems must take into account fair use. Failure to do so removes all
copyright claims on the infringing works." We'll see how cavalier music
companies are about trying out new DRM systems then :)
