thanks for the guidance: I dug through some of the information on udev and
found how to make a rule automatically estabishing the moden to ttyS4
symbolic link whenever the machine is rebooted. Seems to work quite well.
Now, since I understand that my Mandriva system is using udev, is there any
reason to use supermount for floppy mounts?
