UUASC-LA
Unix Users Association of Southern California
Los Angeles County Chapter
June 2006 Meeting
---------------------------------------------
Extreme Linux Performance Tuning
---------------------------------------------
Thursday, Jun. 8, 7-9 pm
Sun Microsystems, Inc.
222 N. Sepulveda in El Segundo
10th Floor -- Martinique Room
---------------------------------------------
IMPORT NOTICE: DUE TO CIRCUMSTANCES BEYOND OUR CONTROL, THE JUNE MEETING OF
UUASC-LA WILL BE HELD ON THE SECOND THURSDAY OF THE MONTH. PLEASE MAKE A NOTE
OF THE CHANGE. We apologize for the inconvenience. Thank you.
A longtime favorite speaker of UUASC who doubled as an Solaris instructor
specializing in security returns but this time wearing a new hat and a penguin
t-shirt after making a major career change.
At the June meeting of UUASC-LA, Darren Hoch will share some Linux performance
tuning insight. His talk is based on some pain-staking lessons learned from
R&D sessions and customer issues concerning his new company's enterprise email
platform.
Darren will cover the basics of how virtual memory, CPU, network, and disks
all rely on each other. He will explain outputs from vmstat, iostat, mpstat,
and sar to quickly find performance bottlenecks on production systems. He will
finish his talk by demonstrating how he tuned the application configuration
files and OS (sysctl and /proc) to optimize and obtain measureable performance
gains.
Darren is a senior technical consultant and resident Linux geek for StrongMail
Systems, an enterprise email application ISV based in San Jose. Before
StrongMail, Darren worked for Accenture and Sun Microsystems, and wrote a
five-day course, "Enterprise Intrusion Analysis".
After the meeting, you are invited to mingle with many of the chapter members
at UUASC-LA's favorite dining and drinking spot. Details will be presented at
the meeting.
WARNING: People may take photographs of UUASC-LA meetings and social events.
If someone is absolutely opposed to having his or her photograph taken, that
person needs to please speak with the photographer.
Warning to photographers: You must have a person's permission to post
photographs in any public manner.
Directions:
>From the South via Interstate 405:
Exit at El Segundo Blvd. Turn left and proceed approximately three miles to
Sepulveda Blvd. and turn right. Stay in the right lane and make a right turn
into the wide driveway just before the Oracle building (222). This driveway
will lead to two parking structures. Park in the one on the left (designated
for 222).
If you miss that wide driveway off Sepulveda, it's okay, you will hit Grand
Ave, make a right turn, pass the Oracle building completely, then make a
right into the first driveway, which is a service road leading to the same
parking structure. Make the first left you can -- this is the parking
structure for 222 building (a slightly awkward left).
>From the North via Interstate 405:
Exit at El Segundo Blvd. Turn left onto La Cienega Blvd (get into the right
lane). Turn right at El Segundo Blvd and proceed approximately three miles to
Sepulveda Blvd. and turn right. Stay in the right lane and make a right turn
into the wide driveway just before the Oracle building (222). This driveway
will lead to two parking structures. Park in the one on the left (designated
for 222).

For any questions on how to get there, call 310-607-2400. However, that number
won't be available after business hours (5:30). After that time, call
310-607-2560.
Parking:
Convenient parking is located next to the Sun office building in the adjacent
parking structure. Entrances are on the South side of Grand Avenue, and on the
East side of Sepulveda Blvd. The garage officially charges for parking, but
does not always collect money late at night, so park at your own risk.
Building:
Entrances to the Oracle building are located on the North and South sides of
the building. However, after business hours, the ones on the North side are
locked from both the inside and the outside, so only use the doors on the
South side of the building. The doors on the South may be locked to the
outside, but the guard can be notified to come open it by knocking on the
door.
UUASC wants to especially thank member Matt Ingenthron of Sun for his
excellent hospitality. And, UUASC wants to thank our host, Sun Microsystems,
for the continued support of our meetings.
--------------------------------------------------
UUASC is for all persons using UNIX either personally or professionally, or
interested in learning more about UNIX. We recognize all varieties of UNIX,
including (without prejudice) SCO, Linux, SVr4, Solaris, AIX, HP/UX, and BSD.
This is a good place to meet others with similar interests and broaden your
skills and knowledge.
There are two UUASC chapters serving Los Angeles and Orange Counties. Meeting
locations for each chapter are detailed at our web site, http://www.uuasc.org.
Please visit our web site.
There are no dues or other membership requirements. More than 300 persons
receive our monthly meeting announcements. Meeting attendance varies to as
high as 75. Hershel Remer serves as UUASC president and leads a team of
volunteers who together manage the club. More volunteers are always needed.
Los Angeles County Chapter meetings are normally held the first Thursday of
each month from 7 to 9 pm ( or whenever we feel like stopping ). Generally,
meetings include a technical presentation on a hardware or software topic of
current interest to the UNIX community and a round-table discussion of current
topics of interest to the group. UUASC-LA needs future topic suggestions (and
volunteers)!!
Pete
