Dan,

I've had better luck w/the 6.06.1 LTS versions of both Ubuntu &
Kubuntu.  (I like KDE).  Don't remember the details, but I had
issues with both 6.10 vers.

The 7.04 vers. are due out this month.  Don't know if they will
be LTS.
