[Lula] Debian apt-get behind proxy server

I need to configure Debian apt-get behind a proxy server.
I've seen several ways using environment variables or apt.conf files.
In my google searching the approaches all see to require that you store
your username and password as part of the proxy - not very secure!

Is there a way to have apt prompt the user for the username and password when
it tries to connect rather than store it?
