[Lula] Help with Debian 3 Exim config and possible DOS attack

I'm running Debian 3 with Exim 3.
Starting this weekend I am getting hammered by what I think is a DOS attack.
The exim mainlog is filled with:
...
2007-12-23 19:00:58 Connection from 195.110.82.161 refused: too many connections
2007-12-23 19:00:58 Connection from 74.94.15.2 refused: too many connections
2007-12-23 19:00:58 Connection from 193.231.197.94 refused: too many connections
...

I'm not getting any mail due to this.

I'm at a loss at what to do.
I've thought about trying to upgrade (new versions of Debian and Exim) but need some
help. Some of the sites seem to indicate there might be a way to configure exim to stop this
type of attack.

I've googled but nothing seemed to help. Several of the checks I found didn't yield any information.
 ps aux |grep exim |wc -l
give 21!

Any kind soul willing to help?

Thanks.
