Hi Steve,
So the solution is not exactly Linux based, but I know that this does
work. When we've had to do this in the past, we've used a DV cam
connected via firewire to an OS X laptop (makes the rig more portable)
running Quicktime Broadcaster
(http://www.apple.com/quicktime/broadcaster/) which in turn talks to a
OS X server running Quicktime Streaming Server. The live streams can
also be saved and archived. I believe the only caveat we ran into was
not being able to use H.264 because the Quicktime 6 clients couldn't
decode it.
