yep, it is a fake RAID. I'm not even sure if the guy who owns and spec'd
and bought the server is aware of that.
(lots more reading confirmed it. Thanks Michael for setting me in the
right direction. In the end I ended up at a site of an Australian
engineer who made 'mdadm' which I discovered is a Linux RAID app. The
Ubuntu installer is actually equipped to deal with software RAID using
mdadm, but it was extremely hard to find in their options part of the
disk manager.
In the end it all worked out fine though, nice little RAID1 setup....
