[Lula] Microphone not working in Ubuntu

Hi Guys,

I am having a hellova time getting no sound input from my microphone in
Ubuntu. I have googled for hours, and done all that I could find (not
much)

Is there a more direct way to even see if there is mic input through a
command line so I can tell if something is even getting in ? 
I have Ekiga running with video and everything, but hte mic not working
is a deal breaker.
I have also tried two different microphones.
