I wanted to rip an audio CD, but I usually keep a second battery in the
modular bay on my laptop.  I recalled that in the past I had to shutdown
the laptop and reboot with the CD drive in the bay in order to get it
recognized.  After closing all my applications and syncing the disk, I
decided to throw all caution into the wind and just try to insert the CD
drive just to see what would happen.  To my surprise, the kernel
recognized it and I was able to go on to rip the CD.  Linux has come a
long way!
